Josh took the paper and looked at it. Josh thought,
O boy, Protego.

Alexia unfolded her parchment.
"Expelliarmus," it said.
She smirked and read it aloud.

"Excellent," Melanie said after both students revealed which spell they had chosen, and she immediately moved the lesson forward by delivering the instructions of the first spell.
"The spell Mr. Brown has chosen, Protego is a relatively simple spell to cast, even for beginners. Proper enunciation and a swift slashing movement of the arm will ensure that you have a sufficient shield against most spells."
Demonstrating this, she said Protego! while going through the motions, creating a shining silver barrier between her and the class. Satisfied she had made her point, she looked to her volunteer.
"Go on then," she said, looking to Josh, "give it a go."

Josh took up his wand, and with a slashing movement of his wand, he yelled, "PROTEGO!" Suddenly a barrier appeared and quickly disappeared after 5 seconds.

"Not a bad first attempt," Professor Vehrs said as Josh finished his try at the incantation she had taught him and the rest of the class, "You may want to concentrate a bit more, truly focus, if you want the shield to last longer."
Moving right along, she turned to Josh's counterpart, Miss Knightley, with a swish of her robes. With an epitamy of professionalism is raised her wand to the ready stance.
"Your spell, Expelliarmus, is not quite as simple as the Protego charm, but highly useful and still not very complicated. It is a one-motion wand movement, a large concave arc made through the air while saying the incantation."
Melanie demonstrated the motion and the words, the spell performing beautifully and knocking the wand of a Ravenclaw Sixth year across the room in a full-fledged spin.
"Thank you, Mr. Derks, for participating in my demonstration," she told the boy, retrieving his wand for him with another quick bit of spellwork.
"I believe that makes it your turn, does it not, Miss Knightley?" She said turning to the girl who stood beside her, "You may try the spell on me, but please be sure to watch your aim."

Alexia nodded curtly, and imitated Professor Vehrs' demonstration of the wand, carefully aiming at the Professor, then raised her other hand to catch Professor Vehrs' wand.
She smirked and tossed the wand back to Professor Vehrs.

Josh looked at Alexia with a little respect as she could perform an Expelliarmus very well.

Melanie, not entirely suprised that Alexia, a fifth year after all, could perform the Expelliarmus spell with little or no trouble, took her wand back with as much grace as she could muster toward the Slytherin student.
"Thank you Miss Knightley," she said with a nod of her head, feeling the both of them were now sufficiently prepared for their little demonstration, "If the two of you will please take a few steps to either side of the room, we will begin our small wizard's duel. I trust the two of you know the rules of engagement?"

"All too well," muttered Alexia as she stepped to the right of the room. She turned on her heel to watch Josh's progression with a raised eyebrow.

"Yes, yes I know the rules. I hope you are ready Alexia" he said as he looked at Alexia. Josh then walked to one end of the room.

"Likewise, Josh," replied Alexia with some nobilityand a slight smirk as she raised her wand and waited for Professor Vehrs' command.

Ariel watched in anticipation, excited there was going to be a duel. She hoped Josh would win, one him being in her house, and two she disliked the Slytherin very much. This was going to be interesting, and she couldn't wait to do it herself. Once their duel was done she hoped everyone else got to try. She muttered under her breath. "Come on Josh."

Don't hurt her, you would be hated by all if you did

"Fair enough then," Melanie said, back away out of the line of fire between her two students and newly appointed duelers, "The two of you will perform a single spell duel, meaning each of you will only be able to perform one spell, that being the one assigned to you. Mr. Brown, with Protego, and his counterpart Miss Knightley with Expelliarmus. This gives each of you an advantage because you know what is coming, but I trust it will prove educational nonetheless."
Narrowing her eyes she looked from one student to the other firmly, "And I expect no funny business from either of you, do you understand?" The question was rhetorical and she expected no answer, so she waited no longer than a second for the statement to make it's mark before formallly beginning the duel, "On your marks then, both of you, you may begin."
((I will allow the two of you to decide who will win/succeed in the duel given that it does not get out of hand. Might I present the importance of plotting in a situation such as this....))
