Professor Vehrs sat in her scarlett high backed chair behind a mahogany desk, correcting papers she had collected before the end of first semester. A well of deep crimson ink sat along side the papers, and every now and then her quill found its way to the pot.
Glancing up at the large hour glass balanced precariously on a stool adjacent to her desk, she began quiety stacking papers as she awaited the arrival of her students.

"Ah, brilliant," thought Alexia as she entered the classroom.
"I'm the first in."
She looked up at Professor Vehrs, nodded sharply in acknowledgement, then took a seat at the back of the classroom, letting her bag slide to the floor.

Sean took his time walking to the class but that still didnt seam to help as he noticed he was only second in as he walked in.
"Right..." he mumbled to himself as he walked over and took a seat away from Alexia. He did not look up at her once. He placed his bag on his desk and rested his head on it as the pure silence of the classroom was perfect nap conditions.

Elias slowly walked through the halls and finally arrived at Defense Against Dark Arts class. He noticed as he walked into the classroom that a hufflepuff had taken a seat far away from a slytherin sitting in the back. Then he noticed Professor Vehrs at her desk.
I think I'll sit in the front of the class today. Elias thought to himself and then walked to the front row and took a seat there putting his bag of books down he slowly and lightly put his arms and hands on his desk and awaited the rest of the students to arrive.

Ariel walked in, unsure of where to sit. She enjoyed DADA, it being her favourite class, so she headed to the front, or almost there, choosing a seat behind the Ravenclaw boy. Setting her book bag under her seat, she made sure the Slytherin girl from Divination was as far away as possible. The Hufflepuff boy also from Divination, the one that seemed to really like Amelia since the kept looking at each other, sat beside her. They were all away from the troublesome Slytherin.

Alexiel walked into the classroom, and immediately gave the Head of Ravenclaw a huge smile.
"Hello, Professor Vehrs!" she said with a grin as she set her things down on the desk, getting out the needed materials for class.

Melanie, after clearing her workspace for class to begin, watched as her students arrived and took seats respectively spread through the class. Each student had his or her own way of preparing for class, whether it be catching up on sleep or gathering materials.
Nodding to Alexial who greeted her amiably, she moved to the front of her large mahogany desk so as to better present herself for teaching. In any event, she was just about ready to start her lesson so she called attention to herself by clapping her hands together twice, watching as the class drew quiet.
"Welcome," she said professionally, "to your first Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson of the year. Whether it be your very first," she said, looking to a few first years in the back row, "Or a renewal of what you already find interesting," her eyes fell upon several older students, "it is sure to be enlightening to all of us."
Turning around to face the blackboard propped behind her desk, she flicked her wand and in curly script appeared: Defensive Spells.
"Now that we all know the subject of our lesson today," she said turning back to her pupils, "Could someone tell me just how we could define defensive spells?"

Alexia raised her hand, to her slight surprise.
"Defensive spells can be defined as ways of using certain spells in defence when one is attacked or otherwise put in a position where they are in need of defensive measure."

"That is correct Miss Knightly, 5 points to Slytherin," Professor Vehrs said with a nod of approval, quickly moving along with the class. There was no lingering or fussing in her classroom - so much less tended to get done.
"Defensive spells are used, as Miss Kightly said, as means of protection for a witch or wizard. They cause little or no harm to their opponent. Today's lesson focuses on several defensive spells and when they would be used effectively. The first spell I wish to discuss is Protego. Could someone enlighten the class as to what this spell does?"

"Whoa I know this!" He said almost louder then to himself as he raised his hand.
He waited to be called on and then spoke.
"Umm... Its... Oh yea, It makes a magical shield thingy slash barrier around you to protect you from certain curses and hexes. But it doesnt protect seriously strogn ones though..." He said as he ravaged his brain for all memory of this.
Sean your scaring me... Especially if you get this right... he told himself.

Congratulations, Mr. Falton, why don't you enlighten the rest of us? Melanie thought silently to herself as Sean blurted his words rather louder, she supposed, than he had intended. With a nod she aknowledged his hand and allowed him to proceed with the answer.
At his semi-crude description of the Protego spell, Melanie allowed the tiniest hint of a smile to cross the thin line which was her lips, "Yes, Mr. Falton, that is the general idea. 5 points to Hufflepuff. As your fellow student stated, the Protego spell, also known as the shielding charm, is a defensive spell used to create a barrier between you and another person to protect yourself. While useful against hexes, jinxes, and even some simple curses, it will not hold up against more complex spells."
Walking among the desks in her room, she passed by several students as she posed her next question, hoping to find one among them well informed enough to share the information with their classmates.
"The next spell on the discussion list is known as the disarming spell. Does anyone know which spell this is?"

Wow I knew that... Pretty cool huh? he said to himself in his head as he listend on with a smile as she awarded him 5 house points. He listend to what she had to say next.
Answer! Answer it! He said in his head as he raised his hand again.
Almost on instant as he was called on he blurted out "Expeliarmus." He smiled again as he was never one to answer right in class. But hey it must have been his day and this was not to hard either.

A well informed hufflepuff....intriguing...
Her classes, while varied and interesting, were usually dominated by Slytherins and Ravenclaws. That being known, Melanie was pleased to see another house taking such a prominant role in the lesson.
"Right again Mr. Falton," she said with an approving nod, "take another 5 points. Expelliarmus is what we call the disarming spell. Does anyone know the outcome one might see when performing this spell against another witch or wizard?"

Ariel raised her hand in the air, then spoke without thinking. "Might the opposite witch or wizard's wand be knocked out of their hand? Or whatever they are carrying." She felt good giving an answer. Maybe her answer would earn Gryffindor points to... She felt a sudden burst of confidence.

Sean's 5 minutes of fame had ended so soon.
Its not like I knew the answer any ways... He thought in his mind as he went back to his normal self as he placed his head in his hadns and semi-listend to the lesson as he also drifted on to thinking about quidditch like every player was.
